Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephan Chbosky (Realistic Fiction)

Perks of Being a Wallflower is about a boy named Charlie who is going through his freshman year of high school and just can't wait to be done with high school. He starts off the year with no friends just counting down the days he has left to be in high school. The first few days he is alone but then things start to turn around when he meets Patrick and Sam. Patrick and Sam are seniors and Patrick was in Charlie’s shop class. Charlie has a lot of issues he carries with him from his past that continue to haunt him but his new friends are able to help distract him and show him a good time again. It is not all fun and games for Charlie still, there is plenty of drama and problems that come along with his new group of friends.
I had a really great time reading this book. I would say the aspect of this book that made it really great was the characters. Each character had very different personalities and back stories. There were also many different types of relationships that you would face in a normal day to day life. For example, on the first day of school, Charlie wants to make one new friend. He doesn’t meet other students yet, but he becomes friends with his English teacher. Throughout the book Charlie continues to talk to his English teacher, both just getting books and asking him for advice. Another great part about the characters is that the author slowly reveals more about them as time goes on. When Charlie first meets Patrick and Sam they just seem like happy go lucky type of people, and as he gets to know them he sees that is true but there is much more they hide in their pasts and personal lives that make them who they are. Another part of this book I really liked was that it showed the good, the bad, and the ugly. There are many books I have read that only show the great parts of high school and making friends, but in this one it is really easy to relate to Charlie. He is shy and making friends is hard for him but he gets through it.
