The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

The book called The Hunger Games is about a sixteen-year-old girl named Katniss Everdeen. She lives in District 12 in Panem. District 12 is extremely poor and most people die from starvation. In Panem their government is called the Capitol. This year is 74th Hunger Games. The capitol holds the Hunger Games once a year to remember “The Dark Days”. This event requires 24 children to fight to the death with only one survivor. Every year each District holds a reaping which is where one girl and one boy between the ages of 12 and 18 are randomly picked to participate in the Hunger Games. This year, Katniss’s twelve-year- old sister, Primrose, is picked to be a tribute in the Hunger Games. Katniss volunteers to take place of her sister. Katniss has better odds of survival, because she is a hunter. Katniss’s boy counter part is picked, his name is Peeta Mellark. Katniss has to say goodbye to her family and her best friend, Gale. Peeta and Katniss are brought to the Capitol where they spend their last few days before the games in luxury. Also during their last few days, they have to show the Gamemakers how they are going to survive. Their mentor, Haymitch, helps them prepare. Each tribute is given a prep team to make them look their best. The more attractive and charming you are to the audience, the more likely you are to get a sponsor to give you gifts during the games. Peeta and Katniss go into the games, and only one of them can survive. I absolutely loved this book! The whole series is one of my new favorites. It’s such an emotional book and the author did an amazing job conveying the characters’ lives so that it feels like you are there with them. You could feel their pain, but also their love, and hopefulness.

I would recommend this book to anyone. The Hunger Games could be a little bit gruesome at times, but in general I think anyone within the 6th-12th grade age rage should read it. I especially think you should read this if you like books in the dystopian, science-fiction, or even realistic-fiction genres. This book made me feel so full of love because of the way the characters interact together. You should read The Hunger Games because the storyline is so original, and unique, and there are twists in the book that make you always feel on edge. I would definitely call this book a page-turner because once you read the first chapter, you get hooked! One of my favorite things about The Hunger Games is the fact the there is always something new to look forward too - there’s never a dull moment. Overall I would say this doesn’t have any flaws, and that you should go read it, now!
