This book continues the story of Kendra and Seth as the Society of the Evening star gets as close as they've ever been to opening Zzyzx, the demon prison. Kendra and Seth work with the Knights of the Dawn to stop the Society. Their first mission is at Obsidian Waste, one of the secret preserves, where they must get the Translocator, but the Society is trying the exact same thing. The Knights manage to get the Translocator and escape, but not without Seth being captured. Eventually Seth escapes the Sphinx's prison and steals the Sands of Sancity, which he uses to heal Graulas, a demon. Graulas takes all 5 artifacts and control of the Society, and it is up to the Knights of the Dawn to stop the demons of Zzyzx from destroying the world. Seth takes desperate measures to attempt to stop the demons. He searches out one of the strongest blades that is known in the hope that it would help against the demon horde. In order to find the blade he must pay a visit to the Singing Sisters, who will find its location for him, but with a price. Seth obtains the blade and meets with Kendra as they prepare to sail for the Shoreless Isle. They get there and creatures of all kinds gather as they prepare to fight with the demon horde for the fate of the world.
I thought this book was a really amazing one. It had so much to offer that it didn't seem like there was a single part that I could call boring. I loved how everything managed to build on what happened in the previous books while still having uniqueness. The entire book was building up for the big battle at the end, which made it really suspenseful when it finally happened. In my opinion, this book is one of the best in the series, if not the best. I would always recommend this entire series to anyone who enjoys fantasy books, and I think that the author of these books will soon become a very prominent figure in fantasy book writing. I also loved how many new things there are to discover about the world that Fablehaven takes place in. The book takes ideas from old legends and stories and brings them all to life in this world. The characters are another great part. They've had so many nice characters who have turned out to work for the other side, that you're kept on your toes about every new person who you meet in the book. Also, the idea of having the Sphinx run both the Knights of the Dawn and the Society of the Evening star, but secretly be on the side of the Society was really creative and clever. This book and this series will always be one of my favourites, and I hope that Brandon Mull creates many more series like this one!
