Camp by Kayla Miller (Realistic fiction)

Olive and her best friend Willow are so excited for sleep away camp.  They are both excited and sure they will make many fun memories together. But, when they arrive at camp, Olive quickly makes many new friends, while Willow is shy and has a hard time making new friends. Willow starts to feel threatened by the other girls’ friendships with Olive.  In desperation, Willow latches on to her one friend, Olive.  Whether it is picking daily activities or sitting at the lunch table, Olive constantly feels pressured to choose between Willow and her new camp friends. Olive feels burdened by Willow always wanting to do stuff alone without their other cabin mates. Soon, Willow and Olive find themselves in a fight.  Willow feels that she should matter more to Oliver than a bunch of girls that Olive will only see for two weeks and most likely never see again. On the other hand, Olive feels that Willow is just jealous and there is nothing wrong with making new friends even if they live far away from you. Will they remain friends by the end of camp?

Overall, I thought this was a very good book. One thing I particularly enjoyed about this book  is that I could relate to it. I find books more interesting when I can relate and compare the characters life to my own.  I definitely could do that with this book. This book made me think to look at situations with a different perspective. I feel that sometimes we look at things from a single side, which can cause many problems especially in an argument setting. For example, if Olive looked at it from a different perspective she could see that Willow was scared to lose her only friend, and Willow could have seen that Olive just wants everyone  to hang out together. If they looked at it differently they could have avoided a huge fight. This book was an extremely easy read so I would recommend this book to a third or fourth grader. If you like realistic fiction this is a good option for you. I really hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I did.
