Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins (Dystopian)

Every year the cruel yet wealthy Capitol, who rules over the 12 districts, forces one male and one female tribute to fight to the death; all while being recorded on live TV. Last year in The Hunger Games (book one of the trilogy), the 74th Hunger Games were fairly unusual; seeing as the victor from District 12, the poorest district, was the winner. On top of that, there were two winners, Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. Now in Catching Fire (book 2 of the trilogy), Katniss returns to her family and her longtime friend, Gale. She returned safe, yet everything seems different. Gale is being less than supportive and kind after everything she’s been through and Peeta has turned his back on her. Now there are whispers of rebellion against the Capitol, that is starting to sound like Katniss and Peeta may have helped start. Every year the victor from the Hunger Games must visit the districts on the Capitol’s cruel Victory Tour. As the time for Katniss and Peeta to visit the Capitol nears, the stakes are higher than ever. If they can’t prove that they are undoubtedly in love with each other, things could go downhill. Not only for them, but for their loved ones.  As the next Hunger Games nears it is a very special game called the Quarter Quell. Every 25 years the Capitol hosts one. They are very different from a normal Hunger Game, and most of the time more deadly.

This is the second book in The Hunger Games trilogy.  Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins is a very good book for boys and girls in middle school and late elementary school. One of the things I love about this series is that you feel so many emotions. Hope for Katniss, sadness for some of the lost tributes and friends, and hatred for the Capitol. I think Katniss is one of the best characters and it is impossible not to like her. I really love how she is so relatable and I think that is part of the reason I liked her so much. You could really understand how she was feeling and being able to connect with her, amongst other characters made the book such a fascinating read. The book was extremely exciting and suspenseful, making it very hard to put down. The way the words flow across the page making me feel and picture every moment was remarkable and unbelievable love triangle made for a thrilling read. If you like dystopian themes, action packed thrillers, romance and a little bit of violence, this is the ideal read for you. There are two other books in this series if you enjoy this one, plus the prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
